International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church - 2014

Each year in early November Christians from around the world gather to pray for their brothers and sisters who are persecuted because of their faith.

Jesus in John 15 told his disciples, "Remember the word that I said to you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.'  If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.  A little later, in John 16, he assured them, "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

Persecution ranges from lifelong imprisonment, sudden death or dismemberment, loss of family to being outcast from family, friends, or livelihood.  It may come from official or cultural discrimination, disapproval or in many ways.

Even if no death or maiming is involved, there is fear, hardship.  Stories abound of even children responding with courage, but there are also spiritual casualties, our brethren who cave under the pressure and deny their Lord.  And which of us can cavalierly say, "Not I Lord!" when we are not under such pressure.

But we can stand with them in prayer.  Hebrews 13:3 exhorts us to "Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated."  And as God leads we can provide material support.

First, we pray.  So we invite you to join us at Woodbury Sat Nov 1 at 8pm for a live webcast sponsored by Open Doors (details in the linked page), in the main sanctuary.

Then join us for our own time of prayer Sunday Nov 2 at 5:30.

Let's Youth-anize the Church

With that challenge, the young adults who spent a week at Upward Challenge this past July prepared to lead worship.  And lead they did, on September 7, as we celebrated beginning a new era in a new denomination.

They designed the worship service, led the various aspects from reading scripture, leading the congregation in prayer and confession, meeting with the young children, and participating in the sermon.

You may listen to the sermon and also to the service.

Here are some photos of this service:

Upward Challenge 2014

This past July (2014) some of our high schoolers went to Upward Challenge, a week long retreat in the mountains of North Carolina.  The theme for the week was about healing prayer before God.  The practical experience was the personal encounter that each person had with God, intimate times with Jesus and the empowering work of the Holy Spirit with, through and within each of them.

Here are some photos of the group from that week.
